5G+AI – The “key” to Unlock the Metaverse

The Metaverse is not achieved overnight, and the underlying technological infrastructure is the backbone of the application and development of the Metaverse. Among the many underlying technologies, 5G and AI are regarded as indispensable underlying technologies in the future development of the Metaverse. High-performance, low-latency 5G connections are indispensable for experiences such as unbounded XR. Through 5G connection, separate processing and rendering can be achieved between the terminal and the cloud. The continuous development and popularization of 5G technology, the continuous improvement in the breadth and depth of application, is accelerating the integration with AI and XR technology, promoting the realization of the interconnection of all things, enabling a more intelligent experience, and creating an immersive XR world.

In addition, interactions in virtual digital spaces, as well as spatial understanding and perception, require the assistance of AI. AI is critical to shaping the user experience, as the Metaverse needs to learn and adapt to changing environments and user preferences. Computational photography and computer vision technologies will support depth perception, such as tracking of hands, eyes, and position, as well as capabilities such as situational understanding and perception. To improve the accuracy of user avatars and enhance the experience for the user and other participants, AI will be applied to the analysis of scanned information and images to create highly realistic avatars.

AI will also drive the development of perception algorithms, 3D rendering and reconstruction techniques to build photorealistic environments. Natural language processing will enable machines and endpoints to understand text and speech and act accordingly. At the same time, the Metaverse requires massive amounts of data, and it is obviously not feasible to do all data processing in the cloud. AI processing capabilities need to be extended to the edge, where context-rich data is generated, and distributed intelligence emerges as the times require. This will significantly promote the large-scale deployment of richer AI applications, while improving cloud intelligence as a whole. 5G will support the near real-time sharing of context-rich data generated at the edge to other terminals and the cloud, enabling new applications, services, environments and experiences in the metaverse.

Terminal AI also has several important advantages: Terminal-side AI can improve security and protect privacy, and sensitive data can be stored on the terminal without sending it to the cloud. Its ability to detect malware and suspicious behavior is critical in large-scale shared environments.

Therefore, the fusion of 5G and AI will boost accomplishing the challenge of the metaverse.
